Who will
I meet?
Debbie, Lynn V, or Kim will be your first contacts with our office. Debbie is an R.N. and a Certified Massage Therapist. She handles the insurance and is the senior member of the staff. All of the staff will handle your accounts and insurance questions. If they do not have an immediate answer, they will follow-up until your questions are answered. Debbie also maintains a private massage therapy practice.
New
Patients
A typical new patient is scheduled for a one hour visit. This includes a history, physical, and initial treatment if time permits. New pediatric patients are usually a half hour visit. If the new patient desires a simple 5 Minute face-to-face initial consultation, that can be done also on a complimentary basis. Just tell the receptionist that you do not wish to become a new patient at this time and just want to speak to the doctor for 5 minutes in person. This will be part of your medical record by law and in case you desire to see the doctor in the future. If your problem appears to need medical attention, you will be referred to the appropriate provider. Dr. Kuehnemann spends much time devoted to the treatment of damage done from old injuries to the body structure. Traumas can accumulate in the body and cause much wear and tear on our systems.
Examination
The doctor will check your vital signs, listen to your heart and lungs, and feel your spine to evaluate the condition of your nervous system. Muscle strength may be checked along with the condition of your feet, legs, arms, neck, and head. Dr. Kuehnemann does screen for head (cranial) and TMJ (jaw) conditions, if appropriate to your case. Once the initial complaints have been addressed, Dr. Kuehnemann will discuss his findings with you and then you can decide if you wish to receive treatment. You are in charge of your health and care plan at all times. You decide if you wish to be, “Patched or Fixed.” “Fixing” takes longer if the condition has been there for an extended period of time. My job is to make recommendations and then we both share responsibility for your well being. Questions are always encouraged so that you better understand the nature of your problems and how Dr. Kuehnemann plans to treat them. Usually, the more related (and apparently unrelated) clues that you can give to the Doctor the better. Dr. Kuehnemann’s job is to piece them together into a clinical presentation and make neurological sense of them.
Treatment
Often the second visit is extended in order to review the initial findings and initial response to care. This is your second chance to ask questions. I always encourage patients to write their “grocery list” of complaints on a piece of paper and bring it with them during their visits. Routine visits are 15 minutes in length. I strive to stay on schedule. I expect patients to respect my time and I try to respect theirs. Sometimes we lag behind a bit on the office schedule, but most of the time we are close to scheduled appointment times. Treatment may include: chiropractic spinal adjustments, extremity adjustments of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, and fingers. Very gentle manipulation of the cranial, TMJ joints, and soft tissue is common. Dr. Kuehnemann utilizes soft repetitive instrument adjusting techniques whenever possible. Posture analysis is usually performed to evaluate the need for chiropractic care. If there is a “rolling in” of the ankles or dropped metatarsals (foot bones), then a computerized gait scan may be performed. This is done by walking on a state of the art pressure plate with over 4,000 sensors in it scanning at 300 times per second. This study often incorporates 240 thousand bits of data for analysis. This may help to determine the need for a heel lift, spinal and foot adjustments, or custom made foot orthotics.
If there are muscle weaknesses related to your complaints, then tendon, ligament, muscle, and nerve connections will be screened. Receptors in the tissues will be treated to normalize the nerve flow into the spine and brain and out again. Heat or cold, interferential current, electronic infrared therapy, ultrasound, mechanical percussion, manual soft tissue release, stretching, and strengthening exercises may be utilized.
We have a flexion distraction table to traction the lower back for common disc and joint conditions.
Dietary modifications, lifestyle, and
nutritional supplementation may be discussed and recommended.
Patients needing other care such as: medical, dental, counseling,
podiatry, optometry, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc, will be
referred as needed. MRI, CT, X-ray, lab, and other studies are done
